Types of Automatic Gates

Automatic Sliding Gates are increasingly popular and work really well when your space is limited.  An automatic remote controlled sliding gate will provide an additional level of security to your property without having to leave your vehicle to gain access. Automatic sliding gates run on wheels, along a track that has been installed in our driveway. Gate tracks must be kept clear of leaf litter and stones to keep your gate sliding smoothly. Sliding automatic gates slide into a space to one side of the gate entrance, inside your fence. This has to be longer than the gate’s width.

Telescopic sliding gates are divided into section that when closing, slide in next to each other. So sliding telescopic gates are a great idea when you don’t have enough width in your front fence to fit one full-sized sliding gate.   A standard sliding gate motor drives the gate with cables controlling the gate segments to open and close. They slide into a space to one side of the gate entrance that must be longer than the full width of the gate. They also require a separate track to be laid for each gate segment.

Cantilever sliding gates don’t run along tracks.  The gates weighted on one slide to suspended off the ground. The mechanism is hidden behind the fence. This style is suited to uneven ground and extra-wide spacing so is often considered for industrial use. Some materials will be too heavy for this application.

At times swing gates are more suitable where the width is not available for a sliding gate. An automatic remote controlled sliding gate will provide an additional level of security to your property and you can access your property without leaving your vehicle.

Bi-fold Swing gates are ‘cut in half’ vertically so they need only about half of the space of a normal swing gate. The gate panels fold onto themselves as they open. Bi-fold swing gates run either on a track or are guided by a rail above the gates as they operate.  Each leaf is cut in half vertically and joined by hinges. As they swing open, they fold in half in the middle, so needing about half of the space to open. Installing this type of gate requires care and accuracy and is generally more complicated than a swing or sliding gate.

Existing manual gates can be converted to automatic gates, however, some alterations are likely required such as rehanging gates to level them, installation of guideposts and straightening of fence posts.

Is it worth considering adding automatic gates to your property adds instant curb appeal and value. So yes we would see this as a positive investment in your home.

The operation of the motors is controlled by devices such as handheld transmitters, access control systems and vehicle detection devices.

Automatic gates use electric motors to open and close through the use of a transmitter from your kitchen or your car. This transmitter can be attached to the gates you already have: swinging or sliding gates.

When in range, the sensor will send a signal to the gate operator to open the gate. As your vehicle moves out of the range of the sensor, it will close the gate.

Sliding gate motors use an output gear that connects to a rack on a gate. The turning gear then moves the gate. The length and weight of the gate, as well as the frequency of opening, will dictate what size of motor you need.

Can automatic gates be opened manually?

There are Manual Release Mechanisms on automatic gates.  All come with a key that will disconnect the gates from the motor. Once detached your gates are operating in manual mode and can be opened and closed without the use of power.

Should I install an automatic gate kit?

Only you can answer that one!

If you are the handyman we all wish we were, then it could be a possibility. If not, you may be wise to hand over to experienced installers who have a keen eye for the details required to make automatic gates work smoothly.  Some important things to keep in mind when installing gates:

  • Posts must be cemented in deeply.  If not strong enough your gates could sag, and they will not operate as they should and may possibly stop moving.
  • The tracks for sliding gates tracks must be installed with precision. Irregular levels in the tracks may prevent the gate from opening or closing.
  • Cabling has to be properly positioned or you may lose your electrical supply
  • Thorough sealing of all parts is essential to protect them from natural elements.
  •  It is essential that all of the measurements are taken meticulously to allow for the gates to meet perfectly in the middle on closure.

If you’re confident of your abilities, you can install a gate opening system yourself. If not, let an automatic gate installer do the job.
