Timber Fences

Types of Timber Fences

Timber fences are very popular in the Brisbane suburbs where the streets are lined with houses constructed from wood. Whether the house is an historic colonial or classic gable, lifted and renovated, or a contemporary house built with multiple modern materials; there is a timber fence that will suit your needs.

Timber fences are popular because they are cost effective, provide privacy, made from natural materials, can be customised in many ways, and finished with paint, varnish or left in their raw state.

Decorative elements can also be added by choosing designed paling top, additional rails added, as in Hampton style fences, posts can be exposed and a range of styled post tops are available which can lift a fence to another level.

Some common terms used with timber fencing

Open: When vertically placed palings are nailed with an opening between each. The spaces vary according to your needs and budget.

Closed: Vertical palings are nailed up against each paling so no gap is evident. It should be noted that timber does shrink and you will often end up with gaps between palings.

Lapped: When constructing the fence, the palings are overlapped to create 2 layers. This gives you a paling fence with no gaps providing a stronger neat fence with increased privacy and noise reduction.

Capped: A timber fence is capped when a piece of timber is attached along the top of the palings. This adds to the overall strength and durability of the fence as well as providing a different look.

Exposed posts: Exposed posts will be seen on both sides of the fence with the palings aligned at the center point of the post.

Raked: A raked fence follows the level of the ground and is cheaper to construct than a stepped fence. Your raked fence will be fairly consistent ground to height at the top.

Stepped:Stepping a fence will impose an additional cost due to the time taken to design and construct, often with additional materials required. Each panel could begin and end on a different level.

Pine: The majority of fences in Brisbane are built with treated pine palings and posts as they are more cost efficient. Durability is increased with painting.

Hardwood: Hardwood is a more durable material than pine, however, it is also more expensive. Hardwood posts and rails can interchanged and combined with pine palings.

Slat Screen: Slat screens and fences have become popular in recent years and are a great match for a contemporary home. They are also effective for screening garages, rubbish bins and entrance areas. You can chooses between the durability of aluminium slats or the warmth of timber slats.
